Escape Room: The Game

The City Adventurers got to play Escape Room: The Game – Vol. 2.

When we first saw it, with its plastic box, we assumed it must be an easy game for kids. We were wrong. It is a well thought out puzzle solving experience.

The Escape Room in A Box includes a large Chrono Decoder and a set of 16 keys. To solve the puzzles you need to find the right keys and place them into the Chrono Decoder. It involves team work as you figure out what to do with each puzzle.

The Chrono Decoder requires batteries. But at least you don’t have to download an app to play.

There are also 8 hint cards per adventure. These are timed hints. You will hear a beep when you are allowed to use a timed hint card. It’s also a good way of telling if you are on track to solving the adventure.

Each adventure has 3 parts. You will need to find the code of the four keys to enter into the Chrono Decoder. You will have to insert the correct four keys into the machine before you can move on. If you have entered the wrong code, you will hear an ERROR noise and lose a minute from the clock. Once you have entered 3 correct codes, one for each part of the challenge, you will hear victory music and the timer will stop.

The aim is to get 3 correct codes into the chrono Decoder within 60 minutes to win.

The box suggests the game is suitable for 3 to 5 players, aged over 16. We were ok with the age limit, but with 6 of us puzzle solving, at times it felt like there were too many of us trying to get a look in.

If you get stuck there is a website you can visit that offers items to download and even a walkthrough to find out how the adventures could have been solved!

The box contained three different scenarios, Panic on the Titanic, Alice in Wonderland and Dawn of the Zombies, plus an introduction game – the basement.

All were great fun to play. Recommended

The Basement

The heavy door is slammed shut. Your neighbour Jack Wright has been a pest controller for 30 years. Two years ago, his wife suddenly left without a trace. A lot of rumours have been told about the disappearance of Jack’s wife but also about why he was fired three years ago…

The introduction game is a 15 minute taster. We completed it in 10 minutes.

Panic on the Titanic

Out of nowhere a loud bang is heard! The ship crashed against a huge iceberg. While the waves are splashing against the ship, you start to wonder: “This ship can’t sink, or can it?”. When people start screaming, and you see water entering the ship, you know that you must leave the ship, quickly!

Rated Easy – We completed this in just over an hour, but then we did have time taken off for putting in the wrong codes.

Alice in Wonderland

Hey! A white rabbit in a uniform, very odd! He looks at his watch and says that a tea party will start soon. A talking rabbit?!? You follow the rabbit in astonishment and before you know it, the ground starts moving away from you! The start of a bizarre adventure…

Rated medium

Dawn of the Zombies

“We interrupt this broadcasting for some alarming news. Zombies are walking through the city. This is no joke! Hurry to an evacuation helicopter as soon as you can, the city will be completely closed off, you have no time to lose. I repeat…”

Rated hard
