THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

The City Adventurers had had a very long, tedious drive, in stop/start traffic on a hot day, to Banbury and were not feeling their best when they arrived at the Chocolate Factory. Why were we there? Well, this time we were on a mission to help the world famous chocolate maker, Miss Holly Dolly Mixtures, find her secret ingredient.

The Plot – Escape Room in Banbury

The world famous chocolate maker Miss Holly Dolly Mixtures is at her wits end as she has forgotten the fantastic secret ingredient that makes her sweets and chocolates so adorable!

Your team’s mission is to scour her chocolate factory solving all the puzzles and challenges to unearth this vital piece of chocolate heaven, help save the future of the factory so that Miss Holly Dolly Mixtures can reign as the best producer of sweet treats throughout the world.

The Game

We climbed the stairs to SCRAMM’s reception room and were met by our Games Master. The reception area was bright and spacious and so, it turned out, was the Chocolate Factory. No worries about not being able to read anything in dark corners here.

Another good point was no crawling or climbing (and no accessibility issues, other than the stairs to the venue itself, obviously)

We were warned that the game is completely linear and we’d need to solve everything in order. Having made a quick search of the room and it’s chocolate-related decoration, we managed to find the pointer to the first puzzle.

Talking of decor, the room felt like a mixture of over sized candy with an industrial kitchen. Clues were given via a TV screen. And the room contained one large piece of equipment that proved to be our downfall.

There was a variety of puzzles, including a number of physical challenges. As we played the game we managed to find/win chocolates and candy. Being a little pushed for time, I stashed the sweets to indulge later.

There was one particular puzzle that really showed up our different strengths. I failed the task and the GM kindly offered us a work around. Luckily Ian did not fail, but it was good to know that, if we were both struggling, there was a work around available.

This particular puzzle could only be played by one person at a time……and I was happy to delegate the task. Instead of sitting around, like I would in a normal linear game, by the time this happened, we had found some coins and I was able to work on another task to win more goodies.

Result

The game finished with us finding the secret ingredient of Hollie Dolly Mixture’s chocolate (hurrah!)

We thought the experience was aimed at a family audience, although our GM said that wasn’t the case. And don’t take that comment to mean its easy……I’d like to repeat, we were not on top form when we arrived at SCRAMM to begin our mission. That’s our excuse for needing a large number of hints and only just managing to complete the mission in time!

Having said that we did find it a fun adventure.

Verdict –

A fun game with hidden sweets found by solving puzzles.
