Escape the Room is a mixture of board game and puzzle solving. Each person is given a character to play and to move around the board. They all have back stories and secret skills that can be brought into play as the game progresses.
There are a number of escape scenarios to play so it is not a one and done game.
Also if you leave long enough between games and play with different characters the game is likely to be played differently, even though the actual solutions will be the same.
Players roll the dice to move around the board. Move the numbers of spaces rolled and don’t have two people on the same spot is the same as other board games. A difference is that the team don’t all follow the same route. There are clues/puzzles to be solved in different areas of each room, so the tams must split up, just like in an escape room, to find the puzzles to solve.
As a team you must solve so many puzzles per room before moving on to to the next room. Play continues until you have solved the required number of clues and you have managed to get your team out to safety.
Don’t worry about your ability to solve the clues. There are handy hints for each puzzle that can be purchased using the supplied coins. And if you are really stuck they even tell you the answer to the puzzle – or you could open it to check your answer.
