The Wits End puzzle is a disentanglement puzzle. The aim of the puzzle is to remove the metal ring from the wooden frame. the rope across the centre has fixed discs on either end. These are too big to fit through the metal ring. There are also two balls on the rope which will not fit through the slot in the wood. It looks impossible but the ring can be removed.
What I like in this puzzle is that we can see the original US patent. This can be found at https://patents.google.com/patent/US3387847. The patent application was filed in 1966 by Robert R Boomhower. If you look at the patent, spoiler alert, the solution is included.
Artistic Ratings
The ratings I have chosen for this puzzle is 7,6,7. I like the simple design and the the bright colours, it could be a piece of sculpture. The patent give an insight into the design and the case for originality.
