The Soma cube is a solid dissection puzzle invented by Danish polymath Piet Hein in 1933. The puzzle consists of seven pieces made up of three or four cubes. These 27 cubes need to be assembled to form a larger 3x3x3 cube. I made this example. I purchased 27 child’s building block and stuck them together.

Artistic Ratings

The ratings I have chosen for this puzzle is 8,7,7. The art element is quite high with this version of the puzzle. The feel of the wood and the size of the block give it a pleasant feeling to hold. The colour gives it a certain aesthetic along with its inherent symmetry. For many years this was a sculpture sitting on a book shelf. The design contains all arrangements of three or four cubes that have an internal angle.
