Totus mundus agit histrionem!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In other words, “the whole world is a playhouse”. It was the motto of the Globe theatre\u00a0and was slightly re-worded by William Shakespeare into “All the world\u2019s a stage” in As You Like It.<\/p>\n

The current Globe Theatre stands a few hundred yards from the site of the original Globe. This\u00a0iconic building was built thanks to the Shakespeare’s Globe Trust initiated by the American actor and director Sam Wanamaker.<\/p>\n

A group of us had a tour around the exhibition, followed by a demonstration of Elizabethan dress. I always wondered how people coped before buttons!<\/p>\n

Elizabethan Theatre<\/h2>\n

Plays were performed in the courtyards of inns,\u00a0college halls, inns and private houses until 1576. Then\u00a0the actor-manager James Burbage built the\u00a0Theatre in Shoreditch<\/a>\u00a0with his brother-in-law John Brayne. This was\u00a0the first purpose-built playhouse in London.\u00a0William\u00a0Shakespeare joined the resident troupe at the Theatre in the 1580s.<\/p>\n

Elizabethan theatres could attract\u00a0up to 3000 people and were used for\u00a0bear baiting and gambling\u00a0as well as for plays.\u00a0This lead to a rise in crime,\u00a0fighting and drinking in the area. Following objections by the public as well as\u00a0objections from\u00a0the Church and the City of London Officials,\u00a0London\u2019s authorities\u00a0banned the public presentation of plays and all theatres within the City limits in 1596.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In \u00a01598 the theatre company leased a plot near the Rose theatre in Southwark. They demolished the Theatre in Shoreditch, and used the timber to build a new playhouse in Southwark, called\u00a0the Globe. Some members of the company, including \u00a0Shakespeare, were offered shares in the new building by James Burbage\u2019s sons Cuthbert and Richard. Work started on\u00a0The Globe theatre in 1597<\/a>. It was completed in 1598.\u00a0The Globe was built in a\u00a0\u00a0Coliseum style.<\/p>\n

During a performance of\u00a0Henry VIII\u00a0<\/em>in 1613, wadding from a stage cannon ignited the thatched roof . The Globe burned down and had to be rebuilt. The next Globe theatre had\u00a0a tiled roof.\u00a0Shakespeare\u2019s company used the new Globe until 1642 when\u00a0the\u00a0Puritan administration ordered the closure of all theatres. It was demolished in 1644.<\/p>\n
